Sydney based artist, Jenny Herbert-Smith, first established her art practice in sculpture, working primarily in steel and concrete exploring weight, structure and form. Today, she brings the same physical intuition to drawing and painting, expanding her visual language while allowing greater spontaneity and play to enter the work.
Music remains central to Herbert-Smith’s process - both as a means of quieting the mind and as a guiding force behind the rhythm of her mark-making. Each line, wash or gesture carries a sense of movement, echoing the fluidity of sound.
She considers her tools - brushes, pastels, charcoal along with her own physical movement - as instruments in an ever-evolving orchestra. Each medium introduces its own tone, weight, and texture, interacting with others to create layered compositions that feel both intentional and instinctive. Through this dynamic interplay, Herbert-Smith’s works emerge as visual scores, orchestrating a balance between structure and improvisation, presence and play.
Herbert-Smith completed her MFA (sculpture)in 2019 at National Art School, Sydney. Her work has been selected for numerous National art prizes including; Sculpture by the Sea, Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, Sculpture in the Vineyards, The Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing, M16 Artspace Drawing Prize, and in 2023 she was a finalist in the National Emerging Art Prize. Her work is held in Corporate and private collections in both Australia and overseas.
